Washington County Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department is your destination for urgent, lifesaving care—staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We provide prompt, expert treatment and support for serious, unexpected medical conditions, helping our community stay safe and healthy.

What We Offer

  • A full-service Emergency Department capable of handling a broad range of critical and time-sensitive conditions.
  • Access to consulting specialists when needed, including cardiology, neurology, pulmonology, and other key disciplines.
  • State-of-the-art diagnostic and support services (labs, imaging, respiratory therapy, etc.) to quickly assess and treat emergencies.

When You Should Go to ER

You should come to the Emergency Department for serious or life-threatening issues, or when waiting for a non-emergency facility or clinic might risk worsening health. Common emergencies include:

  • Chest pain or suspected heart attack
  • Stroke symptoms (face drooping, speech changes, weakness)
  • Severe breathing problems or respiratory distress
  • Traumatic injuries (falls, car accidents, serious cuts or burns)
  • Serious allergic reactions
  • Overdoses, poisonings, or ingestion of harmful substances
  • Sudden, severe pain or unexplained symptoms that are worsening rapidly

What to Expect During Your Visit

  1. Arrival & Triage – You’ll be greeted by Emergency Department staff who will quickly assess your condition and assign priority. Patients with the most serious conditions are treated first.
  2. Evaluation & Diagnostics – Doctors and nurses will collect your medical history, perform a physical exam, and order needed tests (labs, imaging, etc.). This helps establish what is wrong and how best to treat it.
  3. Treatment Plan – Based on results, you’ll receive a plan of care. This may include: medication, procedures, stabilization, or possibly admission to the hospital.
  4. Aftercare Instructions – If you are discharged, you’ll get information on home care, medication usage, follow-ups, and warning signs to watch for. If you don’t have a primary care provider, we’ll help refer you to one.
